Quality planting material is one of the major reasons for declining crop yield in many parts of the world. The plants propagated by different techniques like seed, cutting, grafting and budding, where plant tissue culture (PTC) is the most advance technique, comparatively ensuring the healthy and disease free planting material with a smaller area in minimum time span. As space and growth period are constraints in hill regions, the technique of large scale production of disease free planting material from a small tissue in a limited space and in all weather conditions is the best propagation method. This technology has spread most of the research institutes/universities across the world.
Seeing PTC significances in crops like potato and apple rootstocks, HARC established a plant tissue culture lab during year 2009 with department of Science and technology (DST) New Delhi and Uttarakhand state council for science and technology (UCOS&T). Presently under National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS) this pioneer lab located at Naugaon block of district Uttarkashi is working on the mass propagation of latest dwarfing rootstock of Malling and Malling Merton series. Ultimate aim to provide farmers with the best quality planting material with latest package of practises to sustain livelihood in changing climate conditions in Himalayan region.
