Villagers of Kapkot block in Bageshwar district have farming as their primary economic activity that therefore, has a major contribution in the overall economy of the village. Topographically, project area is characterized by hilly terrain, rugged Mountains, valleys, high peaks and rivulets lined with scattered habitations. The area undergoes periodic soil erosion and witness frequent landslides. Vegetation majorly comprises of mixed broad-leaved forests with oak, rhododendron and pine forming natural tree cover. Climate shows characteristic variability with altitude as sub tropical climate predominates in the valleys while temperate one is found on the higher slopes. Limited availability of cultivatable land, low productivity, and poor condition of roads are the major drawbacks of the area, which are restricting the development of agriculture. These factors along with other regional limitations like short agricultural season, low temperatures, high altitude and perpetual problem of soil erosion caused by steep gradients are the major inhibitors to growth of agriculture in the area. More than 80 % of the land is either covered by forests, is barren or cannot be cultivated resulting in small size of land holdings that are often less productive. Thus considering existing challenges and resolving these through integrated agriculture development approach, project intervention is being carried out in five selected villages i.e. Khati a Waccham, Sorag, Kilpara & Badiyakot of Pindar valley, as a cluster these villages are located within a radius of 2 to 18 kms. Under project intervention major thrust on improved horticulture and transformation of best agriculture practices e.g.- fields preparation, Manuring, irrigation, promotions of protected cultivations, introduced improved varieties of vegetable crops and strengthen the capacity of farmers to adapt climate resilience practices are major interventions to improve existing agriculture system. The project further aims to approach these technical Interventions through the incorporation of cluster/group level approach (though Formation/strengthening of Producers Groups (PGs) & Cooperative and market led interventions so that farmers would able to sustain their livelihood.
